P90X on the way to PIETERMARITZBURG!

On our way to Church

Working out hard while waiting for our flight!

We have arrived at our home, PIETERMARITZBURG, for the next 10 weeks..and oh my, it is just gorgeous!!! It is so green, with beautiful hills and mountains for hiking. I went on a hike today with some girls and wow, God's beauty is just endless. I am so appreciative..!! The campus is absolutely beautiful..I feel like I am on a retreat instead of the campus where I'll be studying for the next 10 weeks. Wow, I am so grateful! I absolutely love nature and here, I am completely surrounded by it. Thank you God for your beautiful work!

Before arriving here, I inquired about my lost luggage at the airport and after 48 hours, the airline still had no idea where the luggage was as it was not even showing up in their system. I had tried to remain positive up until now but by this point I was just frustrated. There was not anything I NEEDED in the suitcase but, my main WANTS included my yoga mat, workout DVDs, and workout bands. As many of you know, I can be quite the workout "freak" and this is an area of my life that I need to continually check in with God about and seek him to be in control. I decided to turn to my devotional instead of ranting about my luggage to my friends and I was given the perfect passage to help ease the situation:

"Anything that tends to make you anxious is a growth opportunity. Instead of running away from these challenges, embrace them, eager to gain all the blessings I have hidden in the difficulties. If you believe I am sovereign over every aspect of your life, it is possible to trust Me in all situations". -Jesus Calling

Yes, I was anxious because I did not know how I was going to optimally workout without my luggage. Yes, I was already devising alternative workout plans..and Yes, finally I chose to give God the control and trust him that he would return my luggage in his perfect time. I feel like he is further detaching me from any kind of comfort in this area and I couldn't be more grateful for it. I tried my best to plot and plan to accommodate my love for workouts but clearly God has other plans for me. I finally was able to focus on the bigger picture and the true things that matter as I journaled, spent time with God, and embraced the friendships around me. We also all started to do a P90X abs workout, which was just hilarious as a group of us were on the floor at the airport working out!

We are now all settled into our Chalets on campus. I am sharing a room with Alison, a fellow nursing major, and we share a common space with 6 other girls. The living arrangements are perfect for the setting..and while showering can be quite extreme from hot to cold..atleast we have working showers! Oh yeah, somehow my luggage magically came off the bus with everyone elses..apprently someone loaded it on the bus without my knowledge..!! I believe God has quite the sense of humor :)

We Have Arrived!!

This picture pretty much sums up our travels over here.. 6 hour plane ride, another 6 hour plane ride, and then an 8 hour plane ride!!

Hi All!!
So as most of you know, I have been given the opportunity to spend 3 and a half months in Africa to complete my Community Health Nursing Rotation! Ahh its crazy that it is HERE and we have all arrived in Johannesburg!! Also, as some of you may know I have previously studied abroad in Spain and went on missions to India..both, of which I started blogs but wasn't able to finish due to limited internet. Ekk!! But I am going to try my best with this one to keep you all updated on my travels and how God is moving through me and through South Africa. I pray that his testimony and his truth will be communicated and he can use me as a mere instrument of his amazing work :) I pray that this blog will not be one of pride about my travels and experiences but instead one of humbled thankfulness that I am even given the opportunity to spend 3 and a half months here! May you see him and his works :)

Thank you to everyone who has supported me going on this trip...it means the world to me and I cannot wait to hear updates from you! I pray that you will allow God to move through you in the everyday motions of life and you will be reminded that you do not need to go abroad to do his work. He is endless and his capacity to move through everyone and everything at anytime is amazing..may we all be open to it :)

So, we have officially arrived in South Africa!! Today, we went about Johannesburg, got to see many of the townships and went to the Apartheid Museum! Being here reminds me of how much I LOVE being abroad and experiencing new cultures..I am so thankful that God has provided me with so many opportunities to learn about and interact with his people accross the globe. I am also so thankful for the friendships and bonds that are already forming among the girls on the trip..!! Tomorrow we travel to Pietermartizburg which is where we will be studying for the next 10 weeks. I'll send updates while I am there and please send me updates about you via facebook or email (
khoughton07@apu.edu). Love to All!

Prayer Requests:
*That all of us students will keep open minds as we are introduced to a new culture
*Safety as we travel
*That my lost luggage will show up!!!! Out of over 100 bags, mine was the one lost..ahhh..but Iam trying to remain thankful that I am even here and focused on what I actually NEED instead of everything I want!
*That I will show more of Jesus and less of me through my words and actions
THANK YOU!!!
